Eureka High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps |

|
In my most recent volunteer work with the local Navy Junior ROTC unit at Eureka High School I have been teaching their new Public Affairs Officer, Cadet/Petty Officer 3rd Class Brunette, a sophomore in the unit, who just published her first newsletter today. The next project is a flyer for the Booster Club fund-raising dinner, so I put together the above collage of photos to show what kind of NJROTC activities are being "boosted". All the photos were taken in the last three years either with the Olympus C-8080 or the E-330. The students get to do all kinds of activities, and, yes, the freshman boy above really is flying a Coast Guard HC-130. "Make a left around that next cloud," I think was what the pilot said after raising both hands in the air and saying, "You've got it!" The flag background photo was taken when the cadets raised the colors over the USS Arizona memorial in Pearl Harbor, quite an honor which they all took very solemnly.
This trio of photographs make up part of the masthead on the new NJROTC newsletter. I'm enjoying the wealth of images from almost five years of photographing the cadets. The photos have been used for numerous slide shows and presentations, and now are a good source for promoting the unit. After twisting my arm, I relented and agreed to go on the NJROTC tour to Hawaii again this February - somebody has to do it, right? I have consistently volunteered my photography for two outfits over the last several years - the US Coast Guard and the local Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. I've always been able to mention those "free" photo activities as already filling my schedule when getting the many requests from other organizations, even businesses, to "just snap a quick shot for me while you're in the neighborhood." These photo assignments pay more in adventure than I could every buy. Here are a few photos from last year's NJROTC orientation tour to San Diego, plus see more of my photographs from the trip at the Eureka High School NJROTC web page. |
