The
St. George Reef Lighthouse was built between 1882 and 1892 to warn
of the treacherous rocks six miles offshore of Crescent City in
Northern California. Abandoned since the 1970s, it was maintained
for many years by the U.S. Coast Guard, whose headquarters near
Eureka are about a half-hour helicopter flight away. A local chapter
of the Lighthouse Preservation Society has recently started efforts
to restore the lighthouse. It is Americas most expensive lighthouse;
an engineering feat taking 10 years to construct, built by George
Ballantyne; replaced by large navigational buoy.
